The first grandchild of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Segun Awolowo, yesterday, lamented the death of the publisher of the Tribune Newspapers, Chief Oluwole Awolowo. Segun, who fielded questions from journalists in Ikenne, Ogun State on the death of the late scion of the Awolowo family said his uncle lived a fulfilled life.
While describing the death as a great loss, Segun said the only regret of the family and his children was that his grandmother was still alive. His words: “He lived a fulfilled life until he had an accident and was sick. We will him miss deeply. He was an embodiment of love and justice. His children and all of us will miss him terribly, because he was a father to us all. “It is unfortunate that Mama is still alive seeing this but we all come with our different destinies from God. He set different dates for all of us to return home.

As true Christians, if we believe that then we accept that our dates of departure from earth are not linked. It is only God that sets our dates. So with that in mind, we are saddened that Mama is alive to witness this unfortunate incident but we take solace in God that there must be a reason for this.” Reminiscencing on his childhood with his late uncle, Segun said, “since my own father had passed on, he was more my guy, my uncle; anything I could not get from Papa (Awo), I readily got from him without any stress.”
According to Segun, “he (Oluwole) covered me up in so many ways, so many forms, so I have only joyous memories of his life.” Asked how Awolowo’s family would fill the vacuum created by his death, Segun said: “Well, he has children. It is a great loss but we move on and face life. We thank God that He had taken him home to go and rest; he had been in pain since the fatal accident.” Commenting on how he received the death of his uncle, he said,
“Yejide, his eldest daughter, who has been with him in the London hospital phoned to inform the family.” On how the matriarch of the Awolowo family received the sad news, he said, “Mama was devastated, she has been trying to speak with him since he has been in the London hospital; we have been hiding and covering it from her but this is uncoverable.
