Dayton ABC local affiliate WKEF-TV reports that Greg Horn, 35, of Dayton, was arrested this week and charged with child abuse, child endangerment and corporal punishment, after police say he used cable TV cords to brutally whip his teenage daughters after they performed sexually suggestive dance moves in a home video.
Police say the children’s mother turned Horn in after viewing the video. It isn’t known if cops also arrested the person who made the video. Horn’s arrest comes this first week of Child Abuse Awareness Month in Dayton.
“The goal is to always keep kids safe,” said Kevin Lavoie from Montgomery County Children Services. Lavole urged citizens, and even children, to report any type of abuse to the local authorities.
“It may be nothing. But rather than analyze it, let our specialists figure it out and the best course of action,” he said.
“We don’t want people to have any reservations about calling 224- KIDS and letting us know about a circumstance or a concern.”
Whatever those 2 girls did does not justify being whipped like runaway slaves. Corporal abuse is prevalent in the black community, where parents justify their abusive behavior with Bible scriptures.
Most parents whip their children out of anger, not to discipline them — as demonstrated in the video.
This type of violent abuse is not discipline. If parents don’t know the difference between abuse and discipline, they should take a child care training course — or an anger management course. The black community needs to understand that whipping a child with any object is now punishable by jail time.
Children should feel safe and secure in their own homes. Abused children grow up to be abusive adults. And the cycle of violence continues.
A recent study showed that black people are more likely to beat their children than any other race. Black people make up 14% of the population of the United States, yet blacks commit the most violent crimes.
We have to break the vicious cycle of violence in our community.
