Over
30 private and commercial vehicles were burnt to ashes on Thursday
morning when street urchins otherwise known as ‘Area Boys’ over ran
Idi-Oro in the Mushin area of Lagos.
The incident took place between 1.30 a.m. and 2.00 a.m. at Ike-Olu Street.
The hoodlums were said to have fired at the police who responded to
distress call, and injured several of them, thus forcing them (police)
to retreat.
Several wounded policemen were said to have been rushed to hospitals.Among burnt vehicles was that of a commercial bank.
The others include commercial buses, private cars, and a bus belonging to the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT).
Also vandalised was the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Judah Parish, Idi-Oro.
All the window louvers of the church were broken by the rampaging hooligans.
The reasons behind the action of the ‘Area Boys’ were yet to be
established, neither has the action been traced to any faction of the
gangs in Mushin, Idi-Oro or Jiwowu, since all of them have different
groups of ‘Area Boys’.
A police Armoured Personnel Carrier
(APC) was seen stationed in Idi-Oro, while scores of residents were
counting their losses. - daily independent.
