Sesame Street's Mr Handford, Actor David Smyrl Dead Age 80 After Lung Cancer Battle


Best known for his role as Mr Handford, who ran Hooper's Store on the iconic children's TV show, he reportedly died on Tuesday.

The actor passed away at Lankenau Medical Center outside Philadelphia after being diagnosed with lunger cancer in January, his wife Cheryl confirmed to the Associated Press.

"He was funny," she said in a statement.


"I could say so many good things about him. He was loved by so many people. He was a mentor to a lot of children. He was a family man, loyal, true and faithful."

Born in Philadelphia in 1935, David began in TV career in the 1970s on Express Yourself before making the move to Calofrnia in 1980 to become a staff writer on sitcom Benson.

He moved on to The Cosby Show where he worked as a gag writer and recurring guest performer where he appeared in five episodes.

In 1990 he landed the role of Mr. Handford on Sesame Street, appearing until 1998.

He met wife Cheryl in 1975, though the couple didn't marry until 1992. He is survived by one step-son Pancho Scott.
